CA:
OnionBusiness.com had the good fortune to visit with both John and Brandon Calandri of Calandri/Sonrise Farms in Lancaster, CA. John reported that this season seems to be the best start to the season in the Coachella Valley in years, and Brandon said that weather in the Coachella and Imperial valleys has been very conducive to growing this season.
“The stands are in excellent shape, and the crop is looking great,” he said. “Harvest could be a few days early this season, but time will tell.” Bakersfield looks to be on track for the Calandri planting time frame, and both men said all is going well for the Sonrise operation.

The Rio Grande Valley crop continues to look very good, according to Don Ed Holmes in Weslaco. “It’ll be a little later, around April 1-5,” he said on Jan. 27. “We’ve had some cooler weather, and it’s supposed to get to almost freezing tonight.” Those colder temps can result in bolting for onions that had bulbed, he said.
