Crookham’s 2022 Reveal will be held Tuesday, Aug. 23, in Wilder, ID, with eight new long-day yellow varieties being featured and several commercial long-day varieties in the trial as well.
The trial will kick off at 9:30 a.m. north of Wilder on Fargo Rd between Red Top and Fern roads.
According to Lyndon Johnson of Crookham, “These new varieties are at the stage of advancement where we have them in a small seed production. Next season, Crookham and our dealer partners will be looking to place larger block trials with long-day growers throughout the U.S. to continue the adaptability testing.”
He continued, “We will then gather that data on yield, storage, and shrink of each variety and make an informed decision on what varieties will be able to become the next commercial onion variety from Crookham. Out of nine new entries our hope is to find an additional one or two commercial varieties to continue with. For the most part these selections are of varying maturities ranging from 105-120-day maturity. All of them have between 4-8 months of storage capability.”
Lyndon provided the lineup with some of Crookham’s trial notes from the past seasons:
OLYX15-217: 112-day maturity, early mid-long day season. Performs well under overhead irrigation. High resistance to pink root and fusarium. High single centers. Rich bronze color great scale thickness for long term storage.
