In the works since 2017, progress on the Treasure Valley Reload Center continues. The project will bring rail access to efficiently carry the region’s agricultural products to markets across the country.
Charged with keeping the project on track (pun intended) is new Executive Director Shawna Peterson. The Malheur County Development Corporation, the body overseeing the reload project, chose Peterson for the role following the departure of Greg Smith. Smith led the project since its inception and, together with the board and various partners, achieved key milestones.
Peterson brings her experience as Executive Director of the Eastern Oregon Border Economic Development Board and as a local attorney as the project enters this next phase.
The project’s leadership pivot comes at an important time as the efforts shift from planning and groundwork, both literal and figurative, to more visible construction and ultimately operation. Permitting is underway for the reload center building itself, a 60,000 square foot facility that will be operated by national warehouse and supply chain powerhouse Americold.
Also underway is sourcing for funds to complete the project. In addition to the initial $25.6 million grant from ConnectOregon and additional funds secured to date, another infusion of capital is needed to bring this ambitious project to life.
That number is currently estimated at $8.5 million, and efforts are underway to secure the funding from the Oregon legislature in cooperation with the county and state leadership.
