Third-generation Green Valley Onion Co. in Orange County, NY, is committed to walking out the Golden Rule, as company owner Ed Sobiech Jr. explains in a short video at the operation’s website, www.greenvalleyonion.com.
Ed’s paternal grandfather, Frank, was a farmer in Poland, and in the 1930s he brought his family to the Northeast United States where they settled and continued in ag.
Frank’s son, Edwin Sr., followed in those farming footsteps, working the black dirt of New York. In 1974 he founded Green Valley Onion Co., which, the website explains, is “centered around an area known for its fertile and nutrient rich soil that is great for growing onions.”
Twenty-one years later Ed Sr. was diagnosed with cancer, and the company was passed to Ed Jr., who has “worked to follow in his father’s dream in the onion industry by expanding operations and constantly re-investing in the business.”
One means of reinvestment is through the heart, and Green Valley Onions takes part in October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month by packaging its onions in bright pink mesh. Because of the eye-catching bags, the onions are immediately associated with the ongoing effort to find a cure for breast cancer.
A recent Instagram post announced, “It’s October and our pink consumer packed onions are back on your store’s shelves… keep an eye out for them and help us raise money for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation #breastcancerawarenessmonth.”
Last year Green Valley Onion Co. donated $3,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Kudos to the onion growers and shippers around the country who demonstrate again and again that this great industry is ready to step up when there’s need.
