California:
Steve Gill with Gills Onions in Oxnard told us on Jan. 18 that the onion crop “is on schedule so far.” He said, “Planting schedules are on schedule. We are enjoying the rain here in California helping the drought.”
John Vlahandreas with Wada Farms said the Southern California crop “looks like everything is on schedule, but there have been some cold wet days. He added, “But there was nothing severe or anything that could have caused damage. Just a little delay in getting weed control taken care of, so potentially we could have some smaller onions to start.”
New Mexico:
James Johnson with Carzalia Valley in Columbus said on Jan. 18 the overwintered onions look excellent, and harvest is scheduled to start in June. “We have had consistent rains for the last month, and everything is extremely wet. Our spring seed planting is delayed because of that rain, and the forecast is for more, so everyone is keeping an eye on the sky. Normally we harvest those in July and August.” James said he’s not predicting any delays because “things can change in a heartbeat.”
