G&R Farms in Glennville, GA, announced in late August it has added red sweets to its Peruvian onion program, with the new item available October-December in multiple pack sizes.
Walt Dasher, G&R’s CEO, described the Peruvian deal in a recent company release, noting, “It has been one of the best growing seasons in recent years. Mild weather has made for perfect growing conditions, and our conventional and organic sweets look great, as do our new addition of red sweet onions.”
He added, “It is basically spring in Peru, and that can mean morning fog. The good news is heat units are increasing daily, and fog burn-off occurs rapidly reducing the potential for disease pressure. We recently visited our six growing locations and what we saw is excellent with the majority of the crop coming in in the jumbo range.”
Arrivals were set for late August.
The release went on to say, “Continuing to make investments in our Peruvian growing operations has been a priority. During the growing season, we made investments in expanding our organic acreage, our packing shed facilities, and new dryers, along with upgrading some of our packing line equipment. These improvements are all important investments to meet growing customer demand and to maintain quality and our top priority.”
And, it concluded, “Container shipping companies are still trying to catch up from the Covid era, and recent port strikes in California and worldwide shipping demands have continued to cause some delayed arrivals, but we are managing logistics delays.”
