Now in the second year of its western Kansas onion deal, L&M Cos. will start harvesting that crop soon, according to Nicholas Hulsey, sales specialist in the company’s Raleigh, N.C., offices.
Hulsey said grower Don Mameda is in charge of the transplants growing in Johnson City, KS, as well as Colorado onions from Rocky Ford.
“They are primarily yellows, but we do have some reds and whites,” Hulsey said in late August. “We will be storing some, and we will be packing some fresh.”
He said the onions will ship through March.
“We started our Kansas deal last year, and it’s been such a big success that we’re looking to expand,” he said.
Hulsey said in addition to starting the Johnson City harvest in September, L&M is also packing and shipping from its Rocky Ford operation.
“We are currently shipping 50#, 25#, 10#, and 3# consumer packs,” he said. “Some of our varieties include Red Wing, Legend, Delgato, and Cometa, and our season will run from September through March with these onions.”
