The 2023 Malheur Experiment Station Onion Variety Day will take place Wednesday, Aug. 30, at 595 Onion Ave,, Ontario, OR.
The event will be held in the north field off Onion Avenue – just follow the signs.
Registration starts at 9 a.m. with refreshments in the onion field. The Onion Variety Day includes a hosted lunch at noon, and it is free and open to the public. Please RSVP to ensure proper catering for lunch.
Malheur Station Director Stuart Reitz said, “We have around 50 different varieties in the trial, including yellows, reds and whites in early and full season varieties. In other words, if you want onions, we got ‘em!”
Stuart added, “As always, we will have the demonstration part of the trial for people to view and to cut open the onions to see what they look like on the inside. The report on the yield and quality characteristics will be available at the February growers meeting.”
And he said, “Looking at onions will definitely work up your appetite, so folks are welcome to stay and join us for lunch.”

This is a chance for growers, industry, and researchers to examine a replicate of the onion variety trial where the onions are lifted and laid out in half of the plot and the other half of the onion plot is still growing. There will be a shade canopy setup with water and refreshments in the field.
