First loads of the Chihuahua white onion deal will start shipping May 5 from The Onion House in Weslaco, TX. Don Ed Holmes said this is his second year in the Chihuahua deal, and growers have told him the crop is beautiful, which good quality. “It was a really nice deal last year, and we’re looking for it to run until late June again this year.”
Potandon Produce’s Chris Woo at Murakami Produce in Ontario, OR, said a few onions will start crossing from Mexico through El Paso, TX, this week.
Potandon Produce reports a large size profile coming out of the Imperial Valley, and Chris Woo of Murakami Produce in Ontario, OR, said demand is good this week, with the market holding steady at $11 on jumbo yellows.
TEXAS/Rio Grande Valley:
Quality is excellent and demand is moderate this week, according to Chris Woo of Murakami Produce/Potandon Produce in Ontario, OR. Pricing has been firm at $12 on 50# jumbo yellows. Chris also said supplies will soon be dwindling.
Don Ed Holmes of The Onion House in Weslaco, TX, said his final loads of Rio Grande Valley onions will be shipped May9-10. “The market has stayed at $12 on jumbos,” Don Ed said on May 4. “We will just coast across the finish line next week. We’ll finish clipping on Friday of this week.” Don Ed summed up the season by saying, “This is the 40th year I’ve been in this deal, and back to back we had the worst year last year and the best year this year. Price was good for receivers and for farmers. Everybody is happy. This was a very good year.”
Potandon Produce is reporting good movement of sweet onions out of Vidalia. Chris Woo of Murakami Produce in Ontario, OR, said the sizing of the crop is leaning heavy on jumbo yellow, and pricing on fob is very reasonable at $13 on 40# cartons. The majority of shipments are going to retailers, Chris said.
