Just in time for the IFPA Global in Atlanta Oct. 17-19, Onions 52’s Smileys, tearless sweet onions, will be back in stores later this month. The onions will be featured at the O52 booth #C2357 at the show.
Grown in Washington State, Smileys “offer a consistently sweet culinary experience, without the usual onion tears, O52 said. The domestically grown, premium onions are available to ship from all of the company’s locations, including the new Onions 52-East shed in Ohio.
“We’ve grown our tearless, sweet onions for several seasons now, and every year we have exponentially expanded our acreage, a testament to the premium quality and taste consumers love about these onions,” said Shawn Hartley, Onions 52 president. “Smileys are not an easy onion to grow, and we have perfected the process by investing in proprietary growing and harvesting methods to ensure consumers are getting the top-quality that only our variety of tearless and sweet onions can offer.”
Smiles are harvested in August and remain in storage for several months until reaching the brand’s promise of sweetness and tearlessness. While most onions become more pungent over time, Smileys are the opposite, becoming sweeter and more tearless throughout the curing process. It is a hearty, storage variety onion.
Offered in both 3-lb and 5-lb pack sizes, Smileys are shipped in high-graphic, 40-lb fuchsia-hued cartons that are an eye-catcher throughout produce departments.
Onions 52 provides comprehensive merchandising support, including custom point-of-sale (POS) materials, social media backing, educational one-sheets for produce managers, and engaging display contests to help retailers maximize visibility and incremental sales during the Smileys season. The onions are available through mid-April, or while supplies last.
