In a recent interview with OnionBusiness, Volm Companies shed light on its remarkable journey and explained the factors contributing to its prominent position in the onion industry. Volm disclosed insights aimed at providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of the company’s offerings and its unique approach to serving customers.
Volm takes pride in presenting a complete packaging, supply, and equipment portfolio. Manufacturing both equipment and packaging, Volm stands out as a one-stop solution for all onion packing needs. The company’s commitment extends beyond products, reaching customers through efficient distribution channels, manufactured goods, and value-added support services.
Facilitating timely deliveries through a dedicated trucking fleet, Volm told us they ensure that customers receive what they need precisely when they need it. As an equipment service provider, the company focuses on maximizing machine uptime, offering continued service after the sale with creative solutions and competitive pricing.
The company believes that the backbone of Volm’s success lies in its highly trained and experienced service team, comprising 26 field and in-house technicians strategically located throughout North America, available 24/7. This commitment to service is what sets Volm apart, inviting customers to “experience the Volm Difference.”
In 2007, Volm celebrated the significant milestone by acquiring Columbia Packaging in Pasco, WA. Volm told us that the strategic move was driven by several factors, including Columbia’s expertise in both equipment and packaging for onions across various packing styles. With a strong foothold in the potato market in North America, expanding into other markets aligned with Volm’s growth strategy. The Western US states, being major players in the onion market, further justified this strategic acquisition.
Fast forward to 2017, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house celebrated the opening of the new Pasco facility. Daniel Mueller, Volm’s President & CEO, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome from the Tri-Cities area, acknowledging the region’s innovative spirit. The facility, located at 5702 Industrial Way in Pasco, symbolized Volm’s commitment to growth with expanded warehouse space, manufacturing equipment, and increased office space.
A pivotal moment in Volm’s evolution occurred in the spring of 2018 with the decision to embark on domestic Leno manufacturing. Volm told us they recognized the dependency on imported Leno in the market and aimed to provide a reliable domestic source. The Pasco location proved ideal, strategically positioned to complement the import program.
Volm confirmed that the move to domestic Leno manufacturing brought substantial benefits to customers. Smaller quantity orders allowed for reduced inventory levels and just-in-time inventory management. Volm’s ability to turn small orders quickly proved advantageous for customers, offering flexibility in response to varying demands.
Moreover, domestic manufacturing addressed challenges associated with import lead times and shipping constraints. Volm’s domestic production allowed the company to supplement customers’ needs in cases of delayed containers or unexpected increases in crop volume.
Volm Companies is a fine example innovation, customer commitment, and strategic growth. As the onion industry evolves, Volm is committed to offering solutions that go beyond the conventional, ensuring the success of its customers and the sustainability of the industry as a whole.
