This week, OnionBusiness highlights a stunning video capturing the onion harvest at Dickman Farms, located in Silverton, Oregon. The video, which offers a captivating glimpse into the farm’s operations, captures the family’s dedication to hard work and growth.
Dickman Farms, which spans over 3,200 acres in three counties, is no ordinary agricultural enterprise. Founded by Ed Dickman, an immigrant from Germany, and his wife Augusta, this family-owned farm has an impressive history of resilience and growth. Ed’s journey began with a stint at a local mill, but in 1929, he took a bold step forward by purchasing 65 acres of farmland northeast of Silverton, Oregon.
From these humble beginnings, Dickman Farms has evolved into a multi-generational operation under the stewardship of Ed and Augusta’s descendants. Their son, Paul, and his wife Barbara diversified the farm, cultivating cranberries and a variety of field crops while raising their six children. Two of Paul’s sons, Mark with his wife Nancy and Mike with his wife Susan, returned to the farm and spearheaded its expansion beyond dairying to include vegetables.
Today, under the management of Mike and Susan, along with their sons Corey and Ryan, and son-in-law Eric, Dickman Farms is a dynamic agricultural powerhouse. The farm’s diverse production includes turf grass for seed, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, sweet corn, storage onions, hazelnuts, and wheat. Their commitment to family, hard work, and growth has made Dickman Farms a model of successful multi-generational farming.
It should also be noted that Corey’s brother-in-law, Kyle Hannon, handles Dickman’s socials and put together this incredible onion harvest video.
