The 2021 Pacific Northwest Vegetable Association Annual Conference and Trade Show will be held next month at Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick, WA, with the Onion Session taking place Wednesday, Nov. 17, starting at 8:30 a.m.

Kicking off the day of onion sessions will be Dr. Alan Schreiber of Ag Development Group with a presentation on “Chlorpyrifos Tolerance Revocation: What Does This Mean and Where Do We Go from Here?”
Alan will be followed at 9 a.m. by Dr. Stuart Reitz of the OSU-Malheur County Experiment Station, who will look at “Alternatives to Chlorpyrifos.” At 9:39 Dr. Tim Waters of WSU Franklin County will make his presentation, “Where Were the Onion Thrips in 2021?”
The trade show will open during the sessions break at 10 a.m. At 10:45 Tessa Belo of WSU will discuss “Nitrogen Management in Onions,” followed by Dr. Gabriel LaHue, WSU Mount Vernon Break at 11:15 a.m., with a look at “Irrigation Management in Onions.”
At 11:45 a.m. Dr. James Woodhall of the University of Idaho will address “Stop the Rot, Diagnostic and Survey Results,” with the luncheon starting at 12:15.
The sessions will pick up again at 1:30 with “Food Safety Update in Onions” presented by Dr. Joy Waite-Cusic, OSU. At 2 p.m. Dr. Bill Cobb of Cobb Consulting will look at “Abiotic Problems of Onion,” and his presentation will be followed by a break and the trade show until 3:15.
Dr. Gina Greenway of Greenway Consulting will give her presentation on “Onion Economics, IPM, Cost of Production and Break-Even Points” at 3:15, and at 3:45 Dr. Lindsey du Toit, WSU Mount Vernon NWREC, will share the final onion session, “Stop the Rot: Top Results to Date.”
Wednesday’s General Vegetable Sessions, which run concurrently starting at 8:30 a.m., include the “Effect of Soil Compaction on Water Use Efficiency by Watermelon” with Amin Nouri, OSU; Alternative Nematicides for Managing Root Knot Nematodes in Carrots, Melons and Tomatoes” with Jaspreet Sidhu, UCANR; “The State of the Pollinators” with Katie Buckley, WSDA; “Cabbage Maggot in Brassica Crops” with Kristine Buckland, OSU; “Landscape Biology of Beet Leafhopper and Associated Pathogens” with Rodney Cooper, USDA; “Practical Applications of Drones in Agriculture” with Drew Leggett; “Croptime: Scheduling Harvests and Timing Weed Management” with Nick Andrews, OSU; “Japanese Beetle Overview & Response” with Cassie Cichorz, WSDA; “Managing for Soil and Water Quality under Drought Conditions” with Abigail Tomasek, OSU; “Nitrogen Management of Organic and Conventional Cool Season Vegetables” with Richard Smith, UCANR; and “Irrigation Scheduling – Multiple Options to Improve Crop Water Use” with Zamora Re Maria Isabel, OSU.
Thursday includes a Pest Management Session and an Organic Session, running concurrently. The Pest Management gets underway at 8 a.m. with “Distinguishing Heat Stress from Pest and Disease Problems” with Dr. Carrie Wohleb, WSU Extension – Grant/Adams. At 8:30 Dr. Tim Waters, WSU Extension, looks at Effects of Temperature on Insect Development,” and at 9 a.m. there will be a session on “Effects of Temperature on Disease Development with Dr. Lindsey du Toit, WSU Mount Vernon NWREC.
At 9:30 Dr. Allan Felsot with WSU will speak on “Pesticide Toxicology,” with a break/trade show running from 10 a.m. to 10:30.
“Pesticides – Coming and Going” with Dr. Alan Schreiber, Ag Development Group, will be presented at 10:30, and at 11 a.m. Dr. Bill Cobb of Cobb Consulting will look at “How Surroundings Affect Pesticide Decisions.”
At 11:30 “New Technology in Pest Management” will be presented by Dr. Max Feldman, USDA, and Dr. Hannah Rivedal, USDA, will discuss Pests and Diseases of Cucurbits at noon. Her address will be followed at 12:30 by “Use of Models and Trapping in Pest Management with Dr. James Woodhall, University of Idaho.
The Organic Session, also beginning at 8 a.m. on Thursday, will be introduced by Scott Ockey, and presentations will include “Cover Crops and Nitrogen Management” with Nick Andrews, OSU; “Cover Crop Research in Irrigated Columbia Basin Organic Systems and the Western Cover Crop Council” with Doug Collins, WSU; “New Data and Research Updates” with Dr. Alan Schreiber, Ag Development Group; and “Changing Temperatures and Precipitation Patterns Effect on Soil Microbial Communities” with Dr. Shikha Singh, OSU HAREC.
In addition, there will be a number of industry updates from Richard Kelly, Certis Biologicals; Amelia Jordan, Marrone Bio; Peter Bierma, Sym Agro; Shaun Lough, Westbridge Ag Products; Stephen Pryor, AgBiome; and Dr. Cassidy Million, Monty’s Plant Food Co.
