Hailey, ID-based ProSource Inc. has announced it will market the 2018 fresh onion crop for Winter Garden Produce, a Uvalde, TX, company.
In a press release dated March 1, the announcement said the agreement will commence with the new crop harvest in May.
“This marketing alignment will provide the perfect fit to meet the needs of our customers with ProSource’s existing packing operations in Idaho and New Mexico,” the release said.
Winter Garden Produce LLC, a multi-generation farming and packing operation owned by the Carnes family, has been a part of the Texas produce industry since 1950. Company President J. Allen Carnes is the third generation of the family and returned to the family farm after graduating from the University of Texas in 1997.
According to the Pro-Source release, Winter Garden harvest and packing operations will begin the week of April 29 and are expected to wrap up “on or about June 20.” The 2018 fresh onion crop from Winter Garden Produce will consist of approximately 400 acres of yellow red and white onions.
“Winter Garden Produce’s packing operation is set up to fulfill the needs of our customers across the gamut from retail, wholesale, foodservice, and broad-line distributors,” the release continued. “We will be packing bags, boxes, RPCs and consumer packs in all sizes colors this season.”
J. Allen added to the release, “Being a third generation family farming operation, we strive to produce and pack the best onions possible. Having ProSource as our marketing arm will allow us to concentrate on growing and packing thus continuing the tradition of delivering the highest quality product to the consumer.”
To that end, ProSource was founded “to more effectively and directly market the crops of our growers and to provide a consistent supply chain and customer service experience to our customers.” Currently, the marketer’s customer base is comprised of “ foodservice, retail, wholesale and broad-line customers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America.”
Corey Griswold, COO of ProSource, said, “We are very excited that Winter Garden Produce and the Carnes family have chosen ProSource as the most viable option to market their fresh onion production. The addition of WGP will be paramount in bridging any supply gap between our packing operations at Golden West Produce Idaho and Rio Valley Onion in New Mexico.”
