The current TX1015 sweet onion retail promotion, with a sweepstakes that includes 12 prizes “to help you up your barbecue game,” is set to run through June 22, according to Texas International Produce Association organizers.
Dante Galeazzi, President/CEO of TIPA, said sizing and quality lend themselves to the promo effort.
“Quality has been great,” Dante said. “We’re far enough into the season that the skin set looks excellent, sizing is still predominantly jumbo and the industry is at peak production for all varieties and all colors.”
He added, “Buyers can continue to look to Texas for their fresh onion needs for the next two to two and a half months.”
Dante said of post-pandemic marketplaces, “The mix of the crop destination really depends on each season. In a season like this where quality is great, the market is strong and transportation has been available, the mix is likely 30 percent retail, 40 percent foodservice and 30 percent wholesale/other. During the first year of COVID, it was basically ALL retail. In the years following, as we’ve seen foodservice recover that portion of the distribution has grown.”
