Our good friends in the Walla Walla Sweet Onion growing region are preparing for their 32nd Annual Sweet Onion Festival in downtown Walla Walla on Saturday, June 18, and Sunday, June 19.
As in years past, the event will feature wholesome, family-oriented fun, with goings-on geared to all ages. The festival kicks off with a 5k Funion Runion (darn cute!) at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the full slate of activities commencing directly following the race start.
Each year the Washington State Vegetable draws great crowds to such happy contests as the Sweet Onion Sack Races, Sweet Onion Bowling and Bald as an Onion, along with arts and crafts, food vendors, face painting and a good dose of Walla Walla history.
A special Kids Zone will keep youngsters entertained throughout the day, and a country dance team will be live on stage starting at 11 a.m. In addition to the dance troupe, live music will rotate during the festival as well.
Also at 11, the Chef Demos will start, featuring Chefs Jay Etrikin, Robin Leventhal, Ralph Peznecker and the Marcus Whitman Hotel.
Music and dancing will close out the festival’s first day downtown.
The perennial favorite Onion Eating Contest will take place on Sunday morning at 11:45, preceded by the Funion Games’ start at 10:30.
