One of Colorado’s premier potato grower/shippers, Aspen Produce in Center, CO, has a test plot of onions this season – and plans to expand next year if the test results give the green light.
Jed Ellithorpe of Aspen said on Aug. 14 the small plot looks promising for a new program in the San Luis Valley, and if conditions continue favorably, the operation could offer mixed loads for customers.
Farm Manager Jake Burris agreed, noting good size and quality in the Highlander transplants he has growing in sandy soil northwest of Center.
The onions are center-pivot irrigated, and Burris said in mid-August they had sized to mediums.
Both men said the onion test is showing what is possible for coming seasons.
