Greengo Farms in Brawley, CA, will start packing Tuesday, April 23, shipping from a single shed this year.
According to Mike Smythe with Big Country Sales Inc., last year the operation moved trucks between three sheds, which he said “caused some loading issues.”
Mike told OnionBusiness.com on April 17 the facility will have the capacity to pack 15,000 sacks daily. He said, “We poured over one-half acre of cement and hired Pepper Equipment Corp. out of Monte Vista, CO, to install packing lines. We also have two consumer, box and sticker machines, and we will be able to meet customers’ demand for value-added products.”
In addition to the shed upgrades, Greengo increased its red acreage this season, while yellows, sweets and whites stayed the same.
He said, “The three growers under one shed are Joe Heger, Mike Heim, and Jimmy Nuckles,” and Mike added that crews were clipping reds on April 17 and would clip yellows April 19.
“We will ship out of Brawley through mid-June with intermediate varieties,” he said, adding, “We look forward to a good season.”
